ROGA Partners with RGC to Launch New U.S. Responsible Gambling Certification

Key Moments:

  • ROGA has introduced a certification initiative for U.S. online operators, focusing on player well-being and responsible gaming practices
  • The Responsible Gambling Council (RGC), established in 1983, has been chosen as the certification program vendor
  • ROGA accounts for 90% of the legal U.S. sports betting market by handle

Certification Program Targets Enhanced Responsible Gaming

The Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) has selected the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) of Canada to facilitate its new U.S. certification program for online gaming operators. The objective of this program is to elevate responsible gaming protocols by providing a structured, data-based evaluation system for regulated operators. The program scrutinizes operator performance in core areas including self-exclusion options, marketing practices, player support resources, and employee training.

Market Coverage and Independent Validation

ROGA boasts representation of 90% of the U.S. legal sports betting sector by handle. Operators undergoing this certification will be assessed by an independent organization, ensuring increased accountability, and fostering ongoing improvement and evolution in responsible gaming initiatives.

As Dr. Jennifer Shatley, Executive Director of ROGA, stated, “Our members are committed to long-term progress, and with RGC’s support, this program will serve as a clear signal that the industry is backing that commitment with actions that will allow players to make informed decisions about the platforms they use.”

About RGC and International Experience

Founded in 1983, the RGC is an independent non-profit focused on assisting operators in preventing problem gambling and promoting safer gaming practices around the world. RGC’s efforts encompass preparing operators and their teams with training, leading regulatory review, and designing programs to bolster responsible gambling.

The RGC played a significant role in Ontario, where the market for competitive private operators opened in 2022. As a result, fifty operators currently possess licenses to operate in Ontario. There, responsible gaming accreditation provided by the RGC is a necessary component for licensing.

Commitment to Best Practices and Ongoing Collaboration

The RGC’s responsible gambling (RG) accreditation program assists both land-based and online gambling operators with evaluating and managing their RG strategies. In Ontario, operators are required to earn accreditation as a prerequisite for maintaining a license.

“A sustainable online gaming industry must be built on evidence-based best practices, and this partnership with RGC will advance this mission by building a trusted and independent assessment to certify robust responsible gaming standards,” said Shatley.

ROGA and RGC have previously collaborated, conducting research to expand responsible gaming tool usage and launching public initiatives to raise awareness. An example includes the Know Your Play educational initiative directed at college audiences.
